Read or re-read, "Letter From A Birmingham Jail," by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On this holiday that remembers his service to people of every ethnicity, his words challenge us to consider how we are engaged in reconciliation: "the question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be. Will we be extremists for hate or for love? Will we be extremists for the preservation of injustice or for the extension of justice?" ~Scott Seaton
Emmanuel has a vision to be a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural church. By God’s grace, we’re experiencing some of that ethnic diversity already. Our vision, though, is based not in current cultural issues and trends, but in the timeless purpose of God. God’s eternal kingdom will be made up of a vast diversity of people, who are unified in their love for the Lord and one another. Our calling as a church is to preview that kingdom to a watching world. In this course, Scott Seaton and Young Lee will lead an interactive discussion on issues of prejudice and privilege, the need for racial reconciliation, and what it means to live in true unity. Every person and every family has a context, and so our discussions will draw from a book that explores racial reconciliation in the context, history and relationships of our denomination, the Presbyterian Church in America: Heal Us, Emmanuel: A Call for Racial Reconciliation, Representation, and Unity in the Church. If you’re interested in the course, please order a copy of the book (https://www.amazon.com/Heal-Us-Emmanuel-Reconciliation-Representation/dp/099739840X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1547153138&sr=8-1&keywords=heal+us+emmanuel+a+call+for+racial+reconciliation) and join us on Sunday mornings at 9:00 am in room 470. Childcare will be provided, so register for the course by contacting Brittany at [email protected]. Join us in pursuing God’s visions for Emmanuel, as we explore the following topics: January 27: A Gospel Imperative February 3: An Invitation to Listen February 10: Awakening to Privilege February 17: Sins of Omission and Commission February 24: Historical and Theological Perspectives March 3: Confession and Reconciliation
